Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
