Christantus Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden continental adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Missing key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the last 16, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were no match even for a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
