The Game's Dodge Roll Warrants Praise
Having spent time with the popular action RPG, or most other 3D action game, you're probably acquainted with the wonderful feature referred to as the “rolling dodge.” This avoidance maneuver lets your avatar to carry out a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to dodge all incoming damage and create distance from opponents. Seems useful, right?
The dodge roll, though, has received a lot of flak, and not only due to the tumbling; it's been called dumb, a cheap tactic, and an unbelievable technique — and in some cases, I agree. Just imagine me rolling around hostile mobs in another popular RPG — can't touch this Geralt! But Elden Ring's evasion move represents the evasion to top all dodge rolls dodge rolls, and I'll tell you why.
In Elden Ring's case, the developers found a clever approach to counter all sentiments claiming the maneuver is too easy: simply give all foes overwhelming force, multiply it, and each player character who dares come near them will appreciate deeply for their dodge-roll ability, me included. Given the intense difficulty, evading successfully comes across as a triumph, not a cheat.
No alternative avoidance technique in Elden Ring matches this sense of satisfaction and consistency, because swift moves offer limited distance and blocking attempts get quickly shattered by powerful foes. One player advised hopping as the main Elden Ring avoidance strategy, but in addition to lacking ideal movement, I couldn't understand how taking a crushing hit could enhance my odds of beating enemies (inexperience, possibly).
Perfecting the Skill
Although the dodge roll offers respite in an otherwise brutal game, it demands ability. To begin with, the game's evasion move only triggers a frame of protection after you release the roll control, which prevents a quick, panicky escape from dire situations. Moreover, although it may move you aside from opponents, it's much better to employ it as a chance to move nearer, optimally at their back, and land some hits. In conclusion, you still need understand and anticipate foe assaults, because rolling prematurely of a long charging animation may end your invincibility prior to the hit connecting… which will seriously hurt.
A Balanced Mechanic
Even though rolling-dodging in rapid sequence may look a bit ridiculous (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't truly feasible in the game. Naturally, that doesn't render it a plausible combat move — exactly the reason it would be terrifying to experience it in a product like a historical simulation — however, this is a spectacular magical game being considered, therefore, it doesn't matter?
Similar to any respectable evasion move, this title's dodge motion is enhanced with a little somersault-y hop at the start, providing a dynamic sensation as opposed to dropping the character onto the ground. According to your loadout, the move can feel extremely nimble or relatively slow, however, it's consistently quicker and smoother than the dodge rolls found in the earlier games. True, you may embed your big blade in the dirt if you're carrying one, but that's your responsibility for not just playing a crossbow (I'm joking — steer clear of the game with a crossbow).
Ideal Equilibrium
Elden Ring's evasion system creates the perfect balance between difficulty and chance, granting chances of triumph while threatening to take that hope away at the smallest error. Learn this skill, and you'll be rewarded with not only success, but fulfillment.
